Everybody seems to agree that the massive leaks in the two Nord Stream pipelines from Russia to Germany are the result of sabotage. Huge amounts of natural gas – essentially methane – are bubbling up through the sea. But a couple of big questions present themselves.
The first is: “Who did it?” President Yelenski of Ukraine suggests it was Russia, and for sure, Russia has been doing quite a bit of bad stuff recently. And no store should be set by Russian denials of anything. But why on earth would Russia sabotage the pipelines that it owns, and which it can and has used to blackmail the West in relation to the war in Ukraine? Russia knows full well that with winter coming in Europe, there are powerful political voices in Europe saying, “We need the Russian gas. Let’s force Ukraine to cease its counter-attacks on the Russians, and to do a deal whereby Russia gets to keep the eastern territories of Ukraine has its own, so that the gas can be restored”.
So probably not Russia.
