An Unacceptable Loss of Life

Obviously, for anyone with eyes to see and a willingness to make some enquiries, Greta Thunberg is delusional. In her speech to the U.S. Congress this week. She said:

Even at 1 degree of warming we are seeing an unacceptable loss of life and livelihoods.

Utter piffle. The truth is the exact opposite, as the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) data shows. Actually, the figures are like this:

Lomborg Global Deaths from Climate and non-Climate Catastrophes, 1920-2018 (Figure 7)

It is perhaps hardly surprising that Greta does not know better. She is a child, she has been skipping school and she has mental health issues. But she is being steered by adults who do not have that excuse: they are evidently causing some real anxiety, and massive economic damage, by promoting this sort of nonsense. And in practical terms, economic damage means that people suffer: hospitals do not get built, people travel on unsafe roads, there is less law enforcement to keep the streets safe, and so on. Who knows how many deaths Greta will have caused by the time she is finished?

There is some compassion for the child in this comment on Anthony Watts’ post

Using a child, especially one with issues, to spread alarmism is abuse of the child. Who picks up the pieces when Greta loses the fame and has nothing? She was depressed, went on hunger strikes, etc, before all of this. I can’t imagine how she can deal when she’s dropped like a rock when her handlers find a new “messiah”. It usually doesn’t take long for that to happen, either. Setting the child up for failure and depression is abuse.

But how much compassion does Greta have for the other children whose futures she is blighting, I wonder? And what about her handlers?
