There is a somewhat odd website being touted on the social media at the moment called Destroy the Joint. It is odd because, while it purports to be against sexism, it is the work of a rabid misanthrope trade unionist called Sally McManus.
We need not guess about her views, for she has been clear about them. She is a totalitarian of the old school, in the mould of the early Russian communists and Mao Tse-Tung. She wants legislation to ban (in her order of importance):
- Breast implants. She has no problem with breast reduction surgery, but regards implants as “mutilation”;
- Plastic surgery;
- High heels. She thinks that women only wear them to please men;
- Dresses. She thinks they are “stupid”, and are all about sexual access;
- Ridiculous TV shows. She does not know precisely what shows are ridiculous, save that “Ladettes to Ladies” is one of them;
- Shaving body hair.
Now, few of us would regard these things as the zenith of human achievement. But it pretty weird to deny people the freedom to have them, if that is what they want. And dresses??! Why ban dresses and not skirts? And surely, if they facilitate “access” more than trousers, surely that would be access for lesbians just as much as for men?
Bizarrely, she does not want legislation to ban the burqa, which seems somewhat inconsistent. The evidence seems to be that women who wear the burqa typically do so at the insistence of their husbands or a male dominated Islamic clergy, so why is it OK to allow the burqa but to ban high heels? My experience is that women frequency go out and buy themselves shoes with heels without having being driven to do so by male oppression.
The website has a jovial and encouraging air about it. I think Sally McManus will probably go far, and I would not be surprised to see her up on the Labor Party front bench before long.
